The Leadership Experiment – Zaragoza 2010 (by Ioana Susan)
Great experiences are those that break our mundane thought processes through the ideas we garner through them. Despite the fact that I was exposed to many ideas about the congress, at first, none of them gave me the exact picture of how it would be organized. By the end of the congress, not only did I get to know what Aiesec truly represents and how it functions but I also understood better the notion that a true leader is not born nor made, but forged.
Aiesec is an exceptional culture that brings out the leader quality within us. LEX Zaragoza allowed me to learn what this profound culture is all about: it is all about people who work together to develop innovative ideas and shared values. Moreover, the purpose of the tasks created in Aiesec is to develop groundbreaking thoughts and collaborative values. Aiesec is an organization that, through its uniqueness, also prepares eager young minds for leadership. As a future leader, it is a significant consideration to reinvent oneself and to obtain the necessary skills in times of success rather than in times of crisis.
In addition, all the activities we engaged in during the conference emphasized the interdisciplinary approach of Aiesec; this approach makes different people with different perspectives and ideas work together in a harmonious way. A separate section of LEX Zaragoza consisted of debating and analyzing the components needed to make the new socio-economic model sustainable. As written in an AI Newsletter, “what the world needs is a young people who step up and contribute to a bigger cause and a better future.” I understood that in order to do this, it is important not only to be aware of the current events but also to make our own stand about them. By doing so, we can figure out the future that the world will be facing and how we can contribute to the changes that will take place.
I am grateful that through the array of activities at LEX Zaragoza I was able to build up my knowledge and skills – necessary for making our world a better place – and to appreciate the importance of teamwork. As Richard Fuld once said, “It’s all about the team.” This unique experience showed me how true that is: a true leader needs to find the common ground amongst the team to guarantee the harmony towards every goal the organization sets. That is why it is all up to us, as a team, to take the opportunity to improve the people we are today in order to become the leaders and team members of tomorrow.
